House Speaker Mike Johnson has extended an invitation to President Donald Trump to address a joint session of Congress on March 4, 2025.
This address will mark President Trump’s first formal speech to both chambers during his second term.
The new U.S. president typically addresses a Joint Session of Congress shortly after taking office, delivering what is informally known as the “State of the Union Address” or an “Address to a Joint Session of Congress.” However, this is not the official State of the Union, which is usually delivered in subsequent years.
The March 4 address is anticipated to highlight President Trump’s “America First” vision and set the tone for his policy initiatives.
As of now, the White House has not formally accepted the invitation, but President Trump is expected to confirm his participation.
“It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite President Donald Trump to address a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to share his America First vision for our future,” Speaker Johnson wrote on X.

The letter reads:
Dear Mr. President:
America’s Golden Age has begun. Thanks to your strong leadership and bold action in
the first days of your presidency, the United States is already experiencing a resurgence of patriotism, unity, and hope for the future.
Your administration and the 119th Congress working together have the chance to make these next four years some of the most consequential in our nation’s history. To that end, it is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives, to share your America First vision for our legislative future. I eagerly await your response.
Fun fact: Historically, U.S. presidential inaugurations were held on March 4, marking the start of the federal government under the U.S. Constitution in 1789. This practice continued until the ratification of the Twentieth Amendment in 1933, which moved Inauguration Day to January 20 to shorten the transition period between administrations.
