Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been in office less than a week and Democratic lawmakers are already melting down.
In a memorandum issued shortly after RFK Jr. was sworn in as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the White House pledged to “assess the prevalence of and threat posed by the prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, and weight-loss drugs.”
Among those expressing their fury is Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota, who said that this would “cause so much pain” among those suffering from mental health conditions.
“This was one of RFK Jr.’s first orders after being sworn in,” she wrote on the X platform.
“Just an astonishing denial of science and will cause so much pain to the 45 million Americans facing mental health challenges.”

It remains unclear what kind of pain Senator Smith is referring to, especially given that nowhere in the order does Kennedy saw he will block or restrict access to the aforementioned drug types.
The White House memorandum also pleged to “assess the threat that potential over-utilization of medication, certain food ingredients, certain chemicals, and certain other exposures pose to children with respect to chronic inflammation or other established mechanisms of disease, using rigorous and transparent data, including international comparisons.”
Smith was unsurprisingly among one of the 47 Democrats who voted unanimously against Kennedy’s nomination to lead the HHS, despite the fact he is a lifelong Democrat who wants to challenge the power and abuses of large pharmaceuticals and other greedy corporations.

Just this week, Smith announced that she would be stepping down at the end of her term, leaving a Senate vacancy in Minnesota ahead of the 2026 midterms.
“This decision is not political; it is entirely personal,” she said in a video posted on social media.
”But it’s not lost on me that our country is in need of strong progressive leadership right now, maybe more than ever.”
I’ve decided not to run for re-election to the Senate in 2026.
This job has been the honor of a lifetime. For the rest of my term, I’ll work as hard as I can for Minnesotans and our country.
Thank you so much, Minnesota. pic.twitter.com/3sWVib8nKJ
