One of the student leaders of the pro-Hamas protests across the college campuses received a nasty surprise on Monday in the process of trying to become a U.S. citizen.
As NBC News reported, Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, a U.S. permanent resident who was born and raised in the West Bank, was detained on Monday by the Department of Homeland Security during a citizenship interview in Vermont according to his lawyer Luna Droubi.
Mahdawi is accused of supporting Hamas terrorists and harassing people solely on their faith.
Droubi has filed a temporary restraining order, which details that Mahdawi moved to the United States in 2014. The filing also acknowledges Mahdawi, the co-founder of Columbia’s Palestinian Student Union, is a vocal critic of Israel defending itself against Hamas and organized protests at Columbia University until March 2024, before he stepped away for an unspecified reason.
According to Droubi’s filing, Mahdawi planned to return to Columbia in the fall for a master’s degree.
But now he won’t get the chance, assuming a Democrat judge does not step in.
Video footage has emerged online showing the moment Madawi was led out of the building by immigration authorities. He can be seen in handcuffs with three officers escorting him to an SUV.
Madawi holds up double peace signs as he is led away.

NBC News notes the Trump administration using a rarely used provision in immigration law that permits them to “remove aliens who pose serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” Supporting Hamas in their cruel war against Israel certainly qualifies.
DHS made this move days after an immigration judge in Louisiana ruled that fellow Columbia student and green card holder Mahmoud Khalil could be deported. However, a so-called federal ‘judge‘in New Jersey has said he cannot be removed for now.
Senator Bernie Sanders (Socialist-VT) and Congresswoman Becca Blaint (D-VT) issued a joint statement whining about Mahdawi’s detention.
“Earlier today, Mohsen Mahdawi of White River Junction, Vermont, walked into an immigration office for what was supposed to be the final step in his citizenship process,” they wrote. “Instead, he was arrested and removed in handcuffs by plainclothes, armed, individuals with their faces covered. These individuals refused to provide any information about where he was being taken or what would happen to him.”
“Mr. Mahdawi, a legal resident of the United States, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention,” they added.
