Hours after President Trump was sworn into office, a Border Patrol agent in Vermont was shot during a traffic stop Monday afternoon. NewsNation reporter Ali Bradley reported the agent was shot and killed by a suspected illegal alien, Fox News also reported the agent was killed.
In his inaugural address, Trump made a priority to secure the border and crack down on illegal immigration. In November after winning the presidential election, Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with tariffs if they did not act on the border and drug trafficking.
Vermont State Police issued a press release that did not provide many details:
Police respond following shooting involving Border Patrol agent in northern Vermont
COVENTRY, Vermont (Monday, Jan. 20, 2025) — The Vermont State Police is providing law-enforcement assistance following a shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, on Monday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2025.
Members of the state police are coordinating with federal counterparts following the 3:15 p.m. incident. Federal authorities including the FBI are the lead investigative agencies, and all questions need to be directed to them. The Vermont State Police is unable to comment further on the circumstances or nature of this event.
I-91 remains closed in both directions between Exit 27 in Newport and Exit 26 in Orleans. Drivers should take alternate routes. VSP will advise when the interstate reopens.
WCAX-TV reported the Border Patrol agent was shot (excerpt):
Interstate 91 is closed between exits 27 in Newport and 26 in Orleans after sources tell WCAX that a Border Patrol Agent was shot.
Drivers are being told to find different routes.
Ali Bradley reported (excerpt): “A Border Patrol agent in Vermont is dead after being shot in the neck by an illegal immigrant who sources say was a “visa overstay.” Sources say the agent was conducting a traffic stop when he was shot. The shooter is also dead. A woman was injured in the altercation, her status and condition are not known at this time…”
Bradley added the agent had recently been transferred from Texas.
Sources tell me the agent was in his mid 40s and recently transferred from Texas to Vermont.

Bradley posted an update that the immigration status of the shooter was still being investigated:
